Being to the east of Durham Cathedral and from a depiction of the city's founding etched on the cathedral's south side in masonry, taking its name, Dun Cow Lane is said to be one of the first streets in Durham. The first college (University College, Durham) became Durham Castle and the bishop moved to Auckland Castle as his residence in the county. Rail travellers enter Durham coming from the south over a Victorian viaduct that was spectacular high above the city, Durham railway station is on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London. The largest college of further education is New College Durham. Playing in the Northern League, Durham City A.F.C., the football club of the town, once boasted Football League membership between 1921 and 1928 but has long been a non-league club.

Behind Durham Cathedral's High Altar, the shrine of Saint Cuthbert was England's religious site that was most important until the martyrdom of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury in 1170. The regional Archery Team of Durham And Northumberland at Lilleshall NSC in 2014 won the Team Event of National Intercounty, this event saw from 19 counties, 260 archers competing for the title.
